Staying Connected
In Hertsmere, we are running a number of Computers and a Cuppa Sessions. This aims to give members of the public who are struggling to use any Digital Equipment the opportunity to get help through our Digital Champion members of staff and volunteers. We run sessions at three outreach hubs, with a possible fourth starting shortly.
Equipment and Connectivity
- CHH collects redundant IT equipment, wipes any existing memory, and reimages it before giving it to those in need.
- Individual cases are identified using a needs matrix, that allows marginalised groups, BAME communities and those most in need to be prioritised.
- Schools and the VCS network also identify families and individuals with specific digital needs.
- Equipment is gifted or loaned to individuals with the opportunity to purchase (for a nominal amount)
Digital Support
-
Trained Digital Champions will provide 1:1 face 2 face support to users requiring assistance.
-
The voluntary Champions at outreach centres help to set users up and give them the basic skills needed to access online services, including further online training.
-
Allowing users to access online computer use training through Learn My Way website
-
As part of the sessions we offer online training to support users with key software packages, including Microsoft packages, and online shopping/banking.

“Digital access is now such a big part of our everyday existence … it is important to remember that everyone is at different levels of ability. It’s great to be a part of a team that genuinely wants to help improve people’s confidence, overall well-being and safety online”
Fiona is one of our digital champions; she helps local people gain the skills and confidence to stay connected through technology.
“I found the experience at The Centre very fulfilling, especially helping people with their iPads and iPhones, which is where I mainly assisted people.” – Bernice (Digital Champion)
The future of Digital Champions
CHH will deliver two online conferences to advance the project’s effectiveness. and then aims to develop a sustainable strategy to continue repurposing technology beyond the project.
Richards Story 10/08/22
Richard came in to the Hub at Leeming Road as was having issues with his equipment (tablet and Mobile phone) while job searching. I was able to sort out issues he was having with Tablet. Mobile telephone was not Smart Phone so he was unable to read some messages employers sent him. He managed to get a smartphone so I was able to assist him in setting it up so he could use it. Richard comes in every fortnight for training/queries on using his devices.
Graziellas Story 10/08/22
Graziella began to come in to Leeming Hub Pre-covid and since covid has been attending weekly sessions on using her tablet/mobile phone. I gave her various help with emails, sorting photos on her phone. Also helped her with downloading apps that would help her keep in contact with her son who lives abroad. As well as this, helped her searching the internet for flights, shopping etc. She was already quite computer literate, just needed help with some aspects of using her devices.
